What is a Codicil to a Will?

We have seen a number of people change their Wills over the years, including for reasons such as changing their Executors/ Beneficiaries, or maybe adding in certain legacy’s to Charity’s……one thing that is certain in life is change.

A Codicil is a way of changing your Will without producing a new Will document, it is simply a separate signed and dated piece of paper with the changes on (in the correct wording), which should be kept with the original Will. Codicil’s are a bit outdated now, and here at Inheritance Legal Services, we believe that it is just as easy to produce a new Will rather than producing a Codicil. We have experienced clients who have their Wills, but had lost the Codicil they had produced after making the Will. If our clients store their Wills with us, we will produce a new Will as part of the service each time they need changes doing. Did you know that when you produce a new Will it revokes the old Will?

Remember there is times when it is not necessary to change your Will, for example did you know that you do not need to change your Will every time someone changes address? It is a good idea to keep a list of address changes with your Will (never attached) so that your Executors know the exact location of the people named in your Will, should they need to find them.

As always, if you have any questions on the above, please feel free to call our freephone helpline: 0800 170 0475 and we would be happy to help.
